Single Ply Roofing

So the time has come to have a new roof installed on your commercial building. It seems like a pretty straightforward proposition, right? Well, in many ways, it is, but with the variety of choices in single-ply roofing materials available, how can you know which type will best suit your needs?

When deciding which roofing system is right for you, there are several factors to keep in mind. How long would you like your new roof to last? What sort of foot traffic, if any, do you anticipate on your roof? Do you live in a climate where snow and ice are likely to be an issue or where extreme heat puts a significant strain on your building's HVAC system?

These are all questions you should consider as you choose the next roofing medium for your commercial property. Of course, the best way to be sure you're getting the roof that best serves you is to work with a professional, licensed roofing company, like the experts at RPI Roofing.

WHAT IS SINGLE-PLY ROOFING?

As the name suggests, single-ply roofing systems are mediums that require only one layer of roofing material. The seams of a single-ply roof are either heat-welded, solvent-welded or fastened using adhesive seam tape.

There are a variety of options as to how a single-ply roofing system may be installed. Single-ply roofs may be fully adhered, ballasted, mechanically fastened, partially adhered, and self-adhered. Often, single ply roofs will be installed using two or more of the abovementioned methods.

Three of the most popular types of single ply roofing are:

  • TPO Roofing (Thermoplastic Polyolefin)
  • PVC Roofing (Polyvinyl Carbonate)
  • EPDM Roofing (Ethylene Propylene Diene Terpolymer)

THERMOPLASTIC POLYOLEFIN (TPO)

Thermoplastic Polyolefin roofing was first introduced over 30 years ago. A TPO roof will last twenty years, on average. Because they have a reflective white surface, TPO roofs are cost and energy-efficient. The sun's energy is reflected rather than absorbed, making running your building's HVAC system easier and less expensive.

Available in varying roll-widths and thicknesses, TPO roofs are a relatively inexpensive commercial roofing solution.

POLYVINYL CARBONATE (PVC)

Polyvinyl Carbonate roofing systems are made using less oil and petroleum than other popular single-ply roofs, including Thermoplastic Polyolefin (TPO) and Ethylene Propylene Diene Terpolymer (EPDM). First used in Europe in the 1960s, PVC quickly became a popular roofing choice in the United States.

PVC roofing is resistant to acid rain and other forms of acidity. If the roof of your commercial building is likely to collect concentrations of oil, grease, or fuels, Polyvinyl Carbonate roofing may be the perfect choice for you.

ETHYLENE PROPYLENE DIENE TERPOLYMER (EPDM)

Sometimes referred to as "rubber roofing," Ethylene Propylene Diene Terpolymer (EPDM) roofs have been around since 1962, are extremely durable, and require little maintenance. This black roofing membrane is resistant to ozone and harmful UV sunlight.

Derived primarily from natural gas and oil, EPDM roofing systems expand and contract to accommodate and withstand extreme fluctuations in temperature. EPDM is mainly used for low-slope commercial buildings and can last up to 20 years.

EPDM roofs also dry more quickly than white or reflective roofing mediums, which means ice and snow will melt faster, reducing the weight-load on your roof.

DECISION TIME!

Once you've decided which single-ply commercial roofing system is right for you, be sure and have it installed by a licensed, professional roofing company like the experts at RPI Roofing.

Roofing experts know that a significant percentage of roof repairs result not from normal wear and tear but an improperly installed roof. The highest-quality roofing materials are only as good as the company that installs them. Incorrectly installed roofs can lead to leaks, increased storm damage, and reduced roof life, among other problems.

When installed properly, your new single-ply roof will protect your commercial property well into the future and require minimal maintenance. Trust the helpful folks at RPI Roofing to help you select the best single-ply commercial roofing option for your particular job, then install the system with the utmost professionalism and attention to detail.
